Clothing can be expensive, even for a single person. But unfortunately, clothing gets even more costly when you have a family that needs to be clothed.
So, you might be wondering how you can save some money when outfitting your family with new clothes.
Here are a few ways to save money when shopping for your family’s clothing.
Avoid Flash Sales
If you randomly get an email from your family’s favorite clothing store and it happens to be announcing the flash sale that has just started, skip it. Delete the email and do not give it a second thought.
Visiting flash sales, whether online or in-store, is just asking to spend money on clothes that were not needed.
Though, if someone requires new work pants and a flash sale comes up, use it as an opportunity to score the pants at a discounted price. But we repeat, only go to the flash sale if you need something!
Go Secondhand Shopping
Secondhand shopping is a great way to spend cash in all areas of shopping, including clothing. You can find secondhand clothing at thrift shops, secondhand shops, and online through websites such as Poshmark and ThredUp.
Keep in mind that when secondhand shopping online, you may pay a shipping fee.
You can also find secondhand clothing locally through Facebook, Craigslist, Kijiji, and other community buy and sell sites.
Budget for Clothing
All families should be on a budget. Food, utilities, and yes, even clothing should be accounted for each month.
Ideally, a family of four should save no more than 5% of their income on clothing.
Clothing, unless something news is necessary, should not take on a big part of the budget. However, you should adjust your budget to reflect your income and expenses. Having stylish new clothing is not more important than paying for groceries and rent.
Make Minor Repairs at Home
If you are in the habit of throwing a shirt away when the button falls off or donating a pair of pants that have gotten too small, we urge you to consider learning how to make minor repairs to your clothing.
This can be done by watching YouTube videos, researching online, and taking in-person and online classes.
By doing these repairs, you save yourself the cost of having to buy a brand-new shirt to replace the one you got rid of. This could have a $50 price tag, while repairing the item yourself is likely to be under $20.
Common Sense Buying
When buying new clothes for the older members of your family, be sure to buy versatile pieces.
Instead of purchasing a bright, flashy item that can only be worn when the wearer is not at work, opt for a piece that comes in a more neutral, work-appropriate color.
Kids need clothes that are tough and comfortable. They need simple garments that are appropriate for school and playdates. They do not need the fanciest and most fashionable clothing items.
Teenagers are a bit more difficult, as they want to fit in with their peers. Explain to your teens about money and budgeting. If they want something that is pricey, encourage them to save up their allowance or do chores to earn money.
The ways that you can save in the clothing department are genuinely endless, but these are some of our favorites. With any luck, they’ll help you save a few dollars.
