My 6th grade reading teacher challenged our class to a contest…we were to keep track of all the books we read each quarter to see which student read the most. I already loved to read, so this extra incentive simply pushed me to do more of what I loved. My favorites were sports in general and baseball in particular (I read every book John R. Tunis ever wrote). But I also love the biographies…George Washington Carver, Abraham Lincoln, etc. Of course there was a strategy for winning the contest: pick out books you love and avoid long books. I would have loved reading Swiss Family Robinson for example, but I tried to avoid anything over 200 pages.
How did I do? Pretty well. My friend Billy Reed was my main competition, and, if memory serves me correctly we each read about 40 books each quarter.
And, of course, I still love to read. Thanks, Mr. DeWitt, for the contest.
So on the topic of reading, I have picked out some good reading for you. I hope you enjoy the following posts:
- As I read My Strategy For Giving Away Millions of Dollars by Bob at Christian PF, I kept thinking, “Wow! Why not dream and dream big and dream the right dreams?” Bob will challenge and inspire you. Don’t miss this one.
- Would I recommend a post that says, “I wholeheartedly believe that Christians should be the biggest hedonists in the world”? YES. Before you start hyperventilating, understand that I took this quote out of context from Is Money Your Functional Savior? at Redeeming Riches. You will just have to read it now, won’t you?
- One of the most common misconceptions, especially among Christians, is that money is evil. Is Money Evil? will challenge that thinking.
- Want some great advice? Do Something You Love, Before You Have to do Something For Money will inspire and challenge. And while Frugal Dad was challenging his younger readers (25 – 35), this challenge is totally applicable no matter what your age.
- As a guy who has been on several short term mission trips, Short Term Mission Trips: Worth The Cost? caught my attention. Craig Ford at Money Help for Christians is a full time missionary who knows his stuff, so you will appreciate his thoughts. While you are there, check out Craig’s new book. It is a must for anyone considering a short term mission trip.
- If you have never checked out Man vs Debt, you simply have to. Baker is a great writer who will keep you on your toes, keep you laughing and keep you challenged. A good starting place is 3 Lessons I’ve Learned in 3 Years of Marriage
Do you know what a Carnival is? I didn’t for a long time, so maybe this definition from Blog Carnival will help:
We think blog carnivals are a great way for bloggers to recognize each other’s efforts, organize blog posts around important topics, and improve the overall level of conversation in the blogosphere. Carnivals come in edited “editions”, just like magazines or journals. The fact that carnivals are edited (and usually annotated) collections of links lets them serve as “magazines” within the blogosphere, and carnival hosts can earn their readership by providing high quality collections. Since blog carnivals include lots of posts on specific topics, they also serve as a place to connect with those who are expert (or at least highly opinionated!) and those who are interested in that field.
Does that help? Check out some of the blog carnivals I have been a part of this week:
