My youngest son Jonathan and I went to our first high school football game of the season last week. Attending not only the first game, but all the games, has become an annual tradition for us. We arrived a bit early, grabbed a brat with mustard, and found some seats in the visitor’s grandstands. We were immediately blinded by the sun low in the western sky, but as it settled behind the home team announcer’s booth, a feeling of magic settled over me. Old friend fans, fans I hadn’t met, subdued chatter everywhere, then no chatter as the National Anthem was sung by a cheerleader, multiple synchronized cheerleaders, deep green field with clean white stripes, loudspeaker proclamations, the smell of popcorn, players in bright blue and white uniforms and red and gold uniforms, officials with shrill whistles…it was more than I could take in all at once, so I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and opened them again. For just a moment I became one with the evening and it was indeed magic. I tapped Jonathan on the shoulder and spoke into his ear, “Friday night football.”

He smiled and nodded. I think he knew the magic too.
