My prayer time this morning was filled with thanksgiving as I read an upbeat “Caring Bridge” report on how well Austin, a ten month old baby born with serious physical defects, is doing. I also requested a miracle for Mark, a man in our church who has been fighting a brain tumor. I learned later this morning that Mark lost that fight, leaving a wife and college age daughter behind. I remember thanking God for answering our prayers for Austin. But in my finite wisdom, am I supposed to believe that our prayers for Mark have gone unheeded? I just can’t believe that.
At this moment, I do not desire to dig into a theological discussion of answered prayer. All I can think of is that God is love and I am glad that he is in control. Some day, not today, all will be made clear. In the meantime, my job is not to understand, but to trust.

I have found John Piper’s works to be a comfort to me when my mind questions things like this.
Thanks for including me in your links!
Thanks for the link Joe. Sorry to hear about the man in your church. Dealing with these types of things can be so hard – and hard for us to understand.
At our church we recently had a member who was having some tough times – and he ended up committing suicide – leaving behind several children and a wife. When things like this happen it can be so hard to see the purpose – or how God will use it to His good, but I know he will. God can use horrible circumstances to reach people. We just have to have faith, and know that he is with us – and that he cares for us – even and especially when we’re in the depths of a horrible situation.
My condolences to the family.
